  1. EGYPTIANS: 3000-300 B.C.

  3. The Egyptians may have been the first people to 
  4. discover that the sun revolves around the sphere of 
  5. fixed stars in 365 days. The Egyptians associated 
  6. the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, with the rising 
  7. of the Nile and good harvest. Many Egyptian temples 
  8. were constructed so the light of Sirius reached the 
  9. inner chambers.
  10.   According to the Egyptian story of creation, the god 
  11. Ra, the Sun incarnate, emerged from a flower which 
  12. appeared on the surface of the ocean. Ra begat four 
  13. children: Tefnut and Shu became the atmosphere, Geb 
  14. became the Earth, and Nut became the sky and stars.
  15. Ra ruled over them all. Geb's daughter Isis, became 
  16. goddess of the Moon, nature and fertility.
