EGYPTIANS: 3000-300 B.C.
The Egyptians may have been the first people to
discover that the sun revolves around the sphere of
fixed stars in 365 days. The Egyptians associated
the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, with the rising
of the Nile and good harvest. Many Egyptian temples
were constructed so the light of Sirius reached the
inner chambers.
According to the Egyptian story of creation, the god
Ra, the Sun incarnate, emerged from a flower which
appeared on the surface of the ocean. Ra begat four
children: Tefnut and Shu became the atmosphere, Geb
became the Earth, and Nut became the sky and stars.
Ra ruled over them all. Geb's daughter Isis, became
goddess of the Moon, nature and fertility.
The Egyptian zodiac was largely borrowed from the
Babylonians:
